Some XMG and SCHENKER are 100% compatible with each other because they are based on the same hardware. Those models are listed on the same line in this table. In some models (e.g. SCHENKER MEDIA), the USB-C support depends on the chosen GPU.YearDoes laptop supply DisplayPort via USB-C?

How many DP signals per USB-C port?
Is DisplayPort via USB-C connected to iGPU or dGPU?

(This collumn only addresses the *main* USB-C port, such as Thunderbolt. Other ports may have different connection.)
Does laptop support the Thunderbolt protocol?Maximum data bandwidth over USB-CCan the laptop's battery be charged via USB-C?

(In other words, does the laptop support power input via USB-C Power Delivery?)
Can the laptop perform close to 100% with an appropriately sized USB-C adapter or dock?

(If not, then we recommend to use the original power adapter besides the dock.)

Footnote #1: Platform technologies

The "Platform" does not indicate what kind of I/O ports the docking station provides. Instead, it describes the core technologies that drive the I/O ports of this dock - especially on the "input" side. This is relevant in deciding which laptop is compatible and recommended with which dock. For example, a docking station that requires Thunderbolt is not compatible with a laptop that does not support Thunderbolt.

Acronyms used and their relevance:
51
TBT = Thunderbolt 3 (TBT3) and Thunderbolt 4 (TBT4)
These two technologies are generally compatible with each other.
52
USB-C = USB Type-C
USB-C is the smallest, most common denominator for modern docking stations. A dock with USB-C platform support indicates, that the docking station does not neccessarily require TBT. Instead, it can also work with a host that simply supports USB-C. Some docking stations support only TBT, some docks prefer TBT but also have a USB-C fallback mode.
53
DP = DisplayPort
This indicates that the docking station requires a DisplayPort signal from the laptop. This is automatically true for all TBT3/TBT4 docking stations. For USB-C docking stations, it is very common, but optional. If you scroll all the way to the right, you will find docking stations without the DP requirement. These are only recommended for the few laptops that do not output a DP signal via USB-C themselves.
54
MST = Multi-Stream Transport
This indicates that the docking station has a MST chipset inside, which is able to split up a single DisplayPort signal onto multiple, independently controlled monitor outputs. The outputs behind the MST splitter may be any kind of output, including DisplayPort and HDMI.

MST makes it possible to use multiple external monitors on a USB-C host, even if that host only sends out a single DP signal over USB-C. However, MST also naturally splits up the bandwidth of that DP signal, limiting the maximum resolution of those external monitor (typically to 4K/30Hz). Also, MST is usually not compatible with advanced technologies such as AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC. MST may also generally limit the refresh rate of the monitors to 60Hz, even at lower resolutions.

Our MST recommendation strategy:
a) When your laptop supports Thunderbolt with 2 DisplayPort signals, pick a dock without MST.
b) When your laptop has only 1 DP signal, but you also only wish to use one single external monitor on your dock, pick a dock without MST.
c) When your laptop has only 1 DP signal, but you want to use multipe monitors behind your dock, pick a dock *with* MST.
55
DL = DisplayLink
This technology is a low-fidelity alternative to DisplayPort. It uses the simple USB data protocol to emulate an external monitor. Docks with DisplayLinks are only recommended as a "last resort" solution for such hosts, that do not support DP via USB-C.
56
USB-A
USB-A is not able to host a native DisplayPort signal. The very far right side of our list includes a few docks that offer DisplayLink over USB-A. These are technically identical to DisplayLink over USB-C, but they may have even lower USB data rate. Use them only as a "very last resort" solution, if your USB-C port is already occupied.
57
Footnote #2: Power Delivery (PD)

Many docking stations are able to provide power to their laptop hosts. Howewer, only a limited number of laptop hosts are able to receive this power. Please check the collumn "Can the laptop's battery be charged via USB-C?" to see if a laptop model is able to receive power over USB-C.

If you wish to use USB-C to power your laptop, please make sure that the power output of the docking station matches the power requirement of the laptop. Our recommendation matrix is not filtered against this aspect, because we see power delivery as an *optional* feature, not as a *must have*.

Even if a laptop is able to receive power and even if the docking station (or USB-C power supply) matches the power requirement of the laptop, it does not neccessarily mean that the laptop can reach top performance when only supplied via USB-C power. For stationary use in high-performance situation, it is generally recommended to use the original power adapter that came with your laptop, because the original power adapter usually has higher tolerances for peak and surge loads.

If a laptop does *not* support power delivery over USB-C, it is still OK and safe to use a PD-enabled dock. The laptop and the dock will negotiate their shared attributes during the USB-C handshake each time the USB-C connection is established. In other words, the dock will only attempt to provide power, if the laptop asks for it. If the laptop does not ask for power, the dock (or USB-C power supply) will not be able to provide any.
